A WOMAN GIVING EVIDENCE.

Our previous issues contained accounts of the sudden explosion of a mine laid at Hung Mun Lau in Hau Lau Fong which caused some damage to houses and a loss of some lives and that the mine was found by the authorities to have been laid in a house occupied by a certain man surnamed Sung, who was a native of On Fai (Ngan Hwui) and who had, however, previous (to the explosion) removed elsewhere; that this man was suspected to have done the mining and that enquiries were therefore made, which led to the arrest of the man who had acted as his surety in the payment of rents.

We now find that Sung has flown to a distance.

The man who was reported yesterday to have been arrested was surnamed Chu, who belonged to one of the secret societies. A bystander who saw what was done suspecting (it was Sung) told us his suspicions (hence our mistake). With regard to Sz, he was repeatedly tried before His Worship Mr. Pui, the Nam Hol District Magistrate. He admitted having met Sung only once, but he did not really know his true character. He further denied that he knew anything about the mine being secretly laid. His Worship, seeing that Sz tried to prevaricate in his statement and fearing that the case would be indefinitely prolonged, resolved to obtain some substantial proofs as to his guilt. He therefore announced his intention of going to Hung Mun Lau and investigate.

1. Hau Lau Fong is a street in Canton and Hung Mun Lau is a lane running from it.
